Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine is in the headlines again, this time after being brutally assaulted inside an LA Fitness gym in South Florida. The 26-year-old musician, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, was reportedly attacked in the bathroom of the gym by a group of three or four men. The attack left him with cuts to his face and bruises, according to his attorney, Lance Lazzaro.

The incident occurred inside and outside the gym’s sauna, where Hernandez tried to fight back against the attackers. A video posted on Twitter shows the rapper lying on the floor and being kicked by at least two men, while one of them grabs him by the hair. One of the assailants is heard saying, “Take a picture. I’m gonna be famous now.”

The attackers fled the scene after employees at the gym heard the disturbance, and police were called. Hernandez was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance, where he is being treated for his injuries.

This alleged assault is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the rapper. Just a few days before the incident, Hernandez was reportedly thrown out of a Miami baseball stadium for being intoxicated and disturbing fans. In 2019, he pleaded guilty to nine felony charges, including firearm offenses, and admitted his involvement with the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods.

Despite his checkered past, Hernandez’s attorney says he plans to organize protection for the star, who did not have security with him at the time of the attack. The rapper’s release from federal prison in April 2020 due to Covid-19 concerns had been controversial, but his attorney Dawn Florio told PEOPLE in March 2020 that he had “been the perfect model prisoner since his incarceration.”

As the investigation into the assault continues, fans of the rapper are hoping for a speedy recovery and increased safety measures for Hernandez going forward.
